Redmi 5 And Redmi 5 Plus : Xiaomi Launching New Smartphones On December 7 – Xiaomi Incorporated will be launching two brand new mobile phones just in time for the holidays. A recent post from the company in the Chinese site Weibo confirmed the date to be on December 7. Ahead of the launch, photos of the the new smartphones were also on Twitter. These were twitted by Donovan Sung (@donovansung), Xiaomi’s Director of Product Management.
This is the exact tweet by Mr. Sung,
“Is everyone ready for the all-new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus? We’re launching these two new devices in China on Thursday Dec 7. Giving everyone a sneak preview!”
There are four images in Donovan’s tweet and they give us a good look at the new devices. We’ll take a closer look at them one by one. Below is the first one showing the new phone in black.
Xiaomi Redmi 5
The photo above shows the front and the rear of the new mobile for Xiaomi Redmi series. Unlike its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi 4, the new smartphone do not have any capacitive/physical buttons on the front. The smartphone also looks taller with very slim side bezels and an all screen display. This means the new handheld mobiles from Xiaomi will sport the now popular 18:9 aspect ratio seen on flagship smartphones.
The devices were also seen on a TENAA listing ahead of this announcement. The smartphones also received the TENAA certification which is a prerequisite before any phone can be released and sold in China.
The listing gives us some insight as to the specs on the new mobile devices. According to specs list, the Redmi 5 will measure 151.8 mm (L) x 72.8 mm (W) x 7.7 mm (T). It will weigh a mere 157 grams. The smartphone will have a 5.7-inch multitouch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 720. The new devices may come in nine color variants namely black, blue, gray, gold, rose gold, pink, red, silver and white.
Inside, the new smartphones may be powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor. The listing does mention a 1.8GHz Octa-core processor which means Xiaomi may opt for the more budget-friendly Snapdragon 450 for the Redmi 5. The latter is a step up from the Snapdragon 435 used in the existing Xiaomi Redmi 4.
Additionally, the mobile device may have 2/3/4 GB of RAM with 16/32/64 GB internal storage configuration options. For expansion, the smartphone will also have a microSD card slot (Hybrid SIM). Xiaomi’s own MUIU will be on top of Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) which will run on the gadget.
Battery for the new device will be rated at 3,200 mAh which is significantly smaller than the 4,100 mAh battery used in its predecessor.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus
Next comes the premium version of the new smartphone duo, the Redmi 5 Plus.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus shown above share most of the excellent features of its sibling. Its screen is slightly bigger coming in at 5.9 inches and this time, the Snapdragon 625 processor may be inside the unit.
Both smartphones will have a 12 megapixel primary (back-facing) camera and a 5 megapixel secondary (front-facing) camera. Battery for this Plus unit will have a bigger capacity rated at 4,000 mAh. Fingerprint sensors will be located at the back of the mobile devices.
The smaller of the Redmi line will have a price of CNY 1,000 as the “headline poster” says. This is roughly equivalent to about $150 or €130. Expect the “Plus” to carry a slightly higher price.
The new Xiaomi Redmi line will be available for purchase starting December 10 after its announcement on Thursday.
